There are many reasons that a tooth may need to be extracted. It may be decayed beyond repair or fractured. Often teeth, like wisdom teeth, are taken out to prevent future problems. It may also be recommended that teeth be removed to allow for proper orthodontic alignment.
Many years ago, it was believed that an abscessed tooth should be treated with antibiotics prior to extracting. It is now known that the best way to cure the infection is by immediately removing the source of the infection. The tooth should be taken out. This can always be followed by antibiotic, if it is deemed necessary.
